Minister Launches New Affordable Housing Project for North East

June 2009

On 22nd June Housing & Communities Minister Alex Neil launched the start of construction on the new £3.5m affordable housing project in Portlethen, from Stewart Milne Homes and Aberdeenshire Housing Partnership.

The new development will comprise 30 affordable and energy efficient properties built by premium house builder Stewart Milne Homes, ranging from one-bed apartments to three-bed houses, all of which will be available for rent.

Chairman of Aberdeenshire Housing Partnership, Mike Scott, said:
"AHP is delighted to be building much needed affordable housing in Portlethen. The construction of these houses comes at a time when the need for affordable housing is becoming more and more obvious with over 7,500 on Aberdeenshire Council's waiting list alone. In addition the construction industry itself is facing major difficulties as the housing market decline continues. These new houses will be a boon to the community in Portlethen for years to come and we are looking forward to welcoming new residents to their homes next year.

John Low, managing director of Stewart Milne Homes North Scotland, commented:
"We are very pleased to be working with Aberdeenshire Housing Partnership again and look forward to getting this latest project underway. Stewart Milne Homes has a long-standing and successful relationship with the organization, having delivered over 200 affordable homes together to date.

Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil said: "The Scottish Government is investing record amounts in affordable housing, £1.5 billion over three years and this year housing associations in Aberdeenshire will receive over £14.5 million to build hundreds of affordable homes in the North East. "The start of work on properties at Portlethen is great news for everyone in this area. As well as supporting jobs and investment in the local economy this will make a huge difference to many local people and their families who will get good homes that they can afford."

Gurudeo Saluja chairman of Aberdeenshire Council's Social Work & Housing Committee said: "The Council enjoys excellent working relationships with Aberdeenshire Housing Partnership and this is another example of how we can work together to provide much needed homes. This is one of a range of housing developments that the Council is part of and it is very important for us all to ensure that providing more affordable homes remains one of our priorities."

Mike Scott added: "This is a particularly busy year for AHP as nearly 100 houses are due for completion at Fraserburgh & Peterhead and it is hoped that further projects will start on site at Aberchirder and Westhill shortly ."
